SKIN FACT
Skin, in addition to providing a physical barrier, also has immune functions and acts as an interface between the rest of our body and its environment. It is the body’s largest organ, and reflects its internal health. The many functions of skin include protection and sensation, thermo-regulation, immunity, synthesis of molecules that make up the substance of the skin, as well as synthesis of molecules that regulate the interaction of the skin with the outside environment.

The skin is a barometer of health.

SKIN FACT
The thinnest and outer most layer of skin, the epidermis, is no thicker than this page (20-cell-deep). The epidermis is filled with layers of specialized skin cells known as keratinocytes, which start out plump with water in the deepest layer of the epidermis, and then migrate to the skin’s surface where they lose moisture and are eventually sloughed off. As new skin cells move upward, they turn into flat and scaly squamous cells. At the bottom of the epidermis are the basal cells, which produce new skin cells that continually push older cells upward toward the skin’s surface. Also, at the bottom of the epidermis lie the cells that produce melanin, the brown-colored pigment of skin. These cells are called melanocytes. The amount of melanocytes you have in your skin determines your skin color. The topmost layer of the epidermis consists of dead cells, which protects the skin from the environment. These cells are composed of a protein called keratin, which is the same tough substance that makes up your hair and nails. The average keratinocyte takes 28 days to traverse the epidermis in young people, and can take an additional week and a half if you are over 50. Mature skin contains fewer round, plump keratinocytes at any one time and thereby loses its glow, and fine lines start to appear.

SKIN FACT
The dermis is right under the epidermis and is a thick meshwork of complexes of proteoglycans (protein and polysaccharides) and proteins called collagen and elastin that give skin its flexibility and strength, and keep it taut and springy. Within these structural elements, reside the fibroblasts, cells responsible for synthesizing the components of the skin. The dermis also contains blood vessels that nourish the skin, sweat glands, oil glands, and pain receptors (nerve cells). The dermis makes up about ninety percent of the thickness of the skin.

If you plan to be out in the sun we strongly recommend you use a sunscreen product with an SPF of 15 or higher.

Devote Time to Your Skin It Deserves Your Attention and Love
The payback can be enhanced self confidence generated by a healthier appearance.

90% of the symptoms of premature skin aging are caused by exposure to UVA and UVB radiation from sunlight. Most Adverse Effects of Sun Exposure Start at an Early Age.

SKIN FACT
Below the dermis is a layer of fat that insulates the body. This is the deepest layer of the skin, called the hypodermis. It is also referred to as the subcutaneous tissue. The hypodermis serves to attach the dermis to the underlying tissue. The hypodermis insulates and protects the inner organs and helps give skin its resilience.

Skin Cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States, affecting over one million Americans each year. Exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays appears to be the most important factor in the development of skin cancer.

SKIN FACTS
Chronic skin ailments (such as eczema, contact dermatitis, dry skin or xerosis) affect all age groups. Most people with dermatitis are below age 20.

Stop Indoor Tanning Before It’s Too Late!
Artificial sunbathing using ultraviolet light increases the risk of all types of skin cancer including melanoma – the rarest but deadliest form of skin cancer. Researchers found that individuals with some history of indoor tanning were 1.5 times more likely to have basal-cell carcinoma and 2.5 times more likely to have squamous-cell carcinoma than those who had never tanned indoors. Risks for developing cancer were even higher (1.8 and 3.6 times the basic risk for basal-cell and squamous-cell carcinoma, respectively) in individuals who began using tanning equipment before the age of 20.*

Your skin is often the reflection of the state of your health.

Avoid "Wrinkle Foods"

Free radicals cause oxidative stress, which can promote the aging of skin. Sugar and foods that contain saturated fat affect the level of free radicals in your body. Scientific research* has shown that foods rich in antioxidants can help deactivate free radicals before they cause harm to your skin. For example, orange juice was shown to reduce free radical levels by 30% while sugar increased them by 140%. Other foods shown to increase harmful free radicals after consumption included: fast-food egg, cheese and Canadian bacon sandwich with hash browns (90%-100% increase), cream (60% increase), and milk protein (60% increase). Water, of course, had no effect on the free radical levels in the body.

SKIN FACTS
Skin ages faster than the rest of the body. As we grow older, the body is unable to adequately replenish the stores of collagen (the protein responsible for maintaining smooth, plump skin) and elastin, thus giving the skin a thin, papery look.

SKIN FACTS
Individuals with pale skin, light eyes, light hair, freckles, lots of moles, history of (childhood) sunburns or skin cancer, are at greater risk of suffering from sun damage if they are not adequately covered while out in the midday sun.

SKIN FACTS
UV radiation and toxins in the environment can damage immune cells in the skin and reduce their number. This can result in diminished inflammatory responses, decreased ability to fight infections, inability to efficiently eliminate transformed cells that can give rise to tumors, and reduced vascular supply resulting in slow wound healing and decreased nutrition to the skin cells, further slowing the metabolic and synthetic machinery of the skin.

Remember the A B C D’s
of Moles!

The incidence of skin cancers has increased over the past few decades. Melanoma can develop anywhere on your body, even areas that are never exposed to sunlight. Malignant melanoma is the most serious of the skin cancers. Suspicious moles or skin growths can be precancerous or cancerous and the earlier they are detected and treated, the better. Contact your physician or dermatologist immediately if you see a mole or skin growth on your body that matches any of the following:

Asymmetry — one half of the mole or skin growth doesn’t mirror the other half.

Border Irregularity — the edges of the mole or skin growth are frayed, blurred or ragged, and the pigment may spread from the border into the surrounding skin.

Color variation - the mole or skin growth may have shades of black, brown and tan, or there may be areas of white, gray, red, pink, or blue.

Diameter — the mole or growth is larger than the size of a pencil eraser (about 1/4 inch).

Other warning signs include changes in the surface of a mole such as scaliness, oozing, bleeding or the appearance of a bump as well as changes in sensation such as itchiness, tenderness or pain.

What Makes DermaPlenish® Energizing Skin Treatments Different From Others?

Revolutionary Delivery System (Patented)
• Active Form of CoQ10 (Q-Nol®) (Patent Pending)

• Highest Concentration of CoQ10
• Efficient Antioxidant System
• Hypoallergenic — Effective Moisturizer

DermaPlenish® Energizing and Replenishing Skin Formulas are so revolutionary that they are protected by two U.S. Patents and a patent pending. DermaPlenish® is the only family of skin care products that uses the active form of the antioxidant CoQ10 (Q-Nol®) (Patent Pending). The secret of these state-of-the-art skin care products is not only in the special combination of highly concentrated bioactive ingredients, but also in the revolutionary delivery system using the PATENTED BIOSOLV® TECHNOLOGY.

You can have the best and most effective anti-aging ingredients that money can buy, but if you don’t have them in the right "delivery system," even the best ingredients won’t be as effective as they should be in promoting healthy skin. Most CoQ10-containing skin care products are not very effective because they contain particles of CoQ10 that are too large to be absorbed by the skin. DermaPlenish® solves this problem by using the PATENTED BIOSOLV® TECHNOLOGY to ensure that Coenzyme Q10 and the other vital ingredients are absorbed effectively to create a truly revolutionary product to ENERGIZE and REPLENISH your skin

DermaPlenish® not only contains a much higher concentration of CoQ10 than most other cosmeceuticals, but it combines this incredible antioxidant with other powerful antioxidant nutrients such as Alpha Lipoic Acid (the master antioxidant), Vitamins A, C and E as well as Grape Seed Extract to provide a nutrient shield against harmful free radicals. Alpha Lipoic Acid in DermaPlenish® helps regenerate Vitamin C and Vitamin E, as well as Coenzyme Q10 to their active antioxidant forms.

DON’T IGNORE YOUR SKIN!

Most people don’t give their skin much thought even though it is the largest organ in the body, and serves as a protective barrier against bacteria, irritating materials and the environment. Your skin is a living, breathing organ that deserves optimum nutrition and proper protection from environmental toxins and the sun. Your skin is a window to your health and also to your attractiveness. Skin that glows and is unlined, unwrinkled, and unmarred by discoloration, radiates youth, vitality and beauty. Healthy skin replaces self-consciousness with self confidence. If you want to look your best, learn to take care of your skin. It will reward you with a younger, healthier, glowing appearance!

Your skin works closely with the liver to help the body rid itself of both external toxins (environmental) and internal toxins (metabolic wastes produced by the body). It protects your organs from chemicals and harmful substances in the environment.

Just like organs inside the body, your skin is prone to certain specific conditions, some of which are potentially serious, even deadly. For example, the unsaturated fats in the outer layer of the skin are highly sensitive to free-radical oxidation that can result from excessive sun exposure, tobacco smoke, and air pollution. Health experts constantly remind us of how the effects of these environmental factors can increase our risk of developing skin cancer.

In this day and age, it is impossible to breathe and eat without taking in harmful substances. Overuse of alcohol, drugs (including prescription medication), tobacco, coupled with an improper diet (including overeating) further burden the body’s detoxification systems and organs. Furthermore, through the natural process of aging, the incidence and severity of dry skin increases, not only causing fine lines to develop (eventually becoming prominent as wrinkles and creases), but severe itching as well, which may lead to fissures in the skin, thus exposing our bodies to the danger of infection.

Topical Antioxidants in DermaPlenish® Protect Your Skin

DermaPlenish® represents an amazing, unique nutritional skin care product line, which helps counter the effects of damaging pollutants and helps reverse rough, uneven, and dry looking skin. DermaPlenish® provides both protection and nutrition to the skin. The active ingredients in DermaPlenish® work synergistically to reduce the extent of lipid peroxidation in the skin, while preserving skin thickness and elasticity and preventing the development of lines and wrinkles.

DermaPlenish® contains powerful antioxidants, such as CoQ10, Alpha lipoic Acid, Vitamins A, C and E, as well as the polyphenolic flavonoids from Grape Seed and Green Tea extracts, which protect the skin from damage caused by oxidative stress. These topical antioxidants enhance the effectiveness of sunscreens in protecting the skin from the damaging effects of UVA and UVB radiation from sunlight. When applied to the skin, the antioxidants in DermaPlenish® modulate the release of inflammatory mediators and reduce the expression and activity of metalloproteases. Both these actions help reduce the damage to skin cells caused by free radicals. DermaPlenish® also contains other nutrients vital for maintaining skin health, such as Vitamin K1 and Vitamin D as well as Biotin and Panthenol, plus Chamomile Extract, Essential Oils and Natural Skin Emollients to soften, moisturize, and soothe your skin.

DermaPlenish® products have been formulated for use on the entire body, including the face. They contain substantial levels of emollients to soften the skin and help retain moisture. Light emollients have been utilized to allow these products to quickly penetrate the outer layers of skin. DermaPlenish® is an ideal delivery vehicle for critical antioxidant ingredients — Coenzyme Q10, Vitamin C, Alpha Lipoic Acid and Vitamin E. In addition, Essential Oils and Silicones provide an excellent barrier to help retain moisture and protect the skin. DermaPlenish® products can be used in conjunction with most daily skin care regimens.

The health of your skin is a major element in the perception of beauty. DermaPlenish® is a complete skin care program designed to beautify your skin by replenishing the nutrients naturally found in your skin, boosting your body’s first-line defenses against environmental insults, combating dry and aging skin, and promoting skin health--naturally.

DermaPlenish®

Photo-Aging of the Skin is Classified Under the Following Four Headings:

SKIN CONDITIONS:

Type One - "No Wrinkles"

Age: 60 and up

Take a Closer Look at the Effects of Aging On Your Skin . . .

Many changes in the appearance and characteristics of skin occur with advancing age:

Skin cells divide more slowly.
Elastin and collagen fibers begin to loosen and unravel.
Wrinkles start developing as collagen levels in the skin get depleted.
Much of the underlying fat is lost and the dermis and epidermis become thinner.
Skin loses its elasticity, becoming prone to sags and furrows.
Skin fails to retain moisture as it did in youth.
Sweat and oil-secreting glands can’t keep skin from becoming dry and scaly.
Skin can become irritated. Its ability to repair itself diminishes.Wounds heal more slowly.
Permanent small muscle contractions cause frown lines between the eyebrows and crow’s feet (lines that radiate from the corners of the eyes) to appear.
Habitual facial expressions form characteristic lines, and gravity exacerbates the situation, contributing to the formation of jowls and drooping eyelids.

It’s Not Only Your Genes That Determine How Well Your Skin Ages…

Sun damage (photo-aging) from exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation causes further alterations in the skin:

Additional lines and wrinkles appear due to oxidative stress. Aging plays a small but important role in the process that leads to the development of wrinkles. However, researchers state that most wrinkles are caused by exposure to the sun (photo-aging). Smoking also has been shown to accelerate the development of wrinkles.
Appearance of lentigines (freckles), telangiectases (dilated capillaries), blackheads and whiteheads (senile comedones);
Chronic inflammation and disruption of the dermal matrix;
Significant loss of procollagen synthesis;
Damaged collagen and accumulation of abnormal elastin;
Dry complexion;
Lower immunity against infection;
Aging skin disorders and increased cancer risk;

Use a good sunscreen (SPF 15 or higher) along with DermaPlenish® for optimum protection.

Sun Protection

Avoid excessive sun exposure and limit your time in the sun. Don’t cram all your sunbathing into two or three weeks. Frequent short exposures are better than prolonged exposure. Even brief periods of high sun exposure (such as a week long vacation) and tanning beds (which utilize ultraviolet light) can increase the risk of a potentially deadly type of skin cancer called melanoma. Although a tan from sun exposure or a tanning booth may provide some protection against sunburn, this type of protection is generally minimal.
Wear a wide-brimmed hat (with at least a 4-inch brim) to protect the more sensitive skin of your face, head and neck.
Wear protective clothing and sunglasses with at least 99 percent protection against UVA and UVB sunlight.
Apply a broad or full-spectrum sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 15 to all exposed areas of your body including ears, lips and bald scalp areas. Be generous. You need to use about one ounce (about 2 tablespoons) of sunscreen to adequately cover your body. Reapply sunscreen every two hours or every hour if you are sweating a lot. Also reapply sunscreen after swimming and towel drying even if the product is labeled waterproof. Sunscreens should be applied to skin at least 15 to 20 minutes prior to sun exposure.
Use sunscreen throughout the year, even on cloudy days. Clouds can block brightness, but may allow up to 80 percent of UV light to reach your skin. Sun rays not only penetrate clouds and haze, but also reflect off water, cement, sand, and snow.
Beach Lovers…Avoid the sun during the middle of the day, especially between 10 AM and 4 PM, when it’s most intense… You will beat the crowds and also protect your skin from the sun. Remember, sunscreen alone will not protect you from the harmful ultraviolet rays of the sun and prevent premature aging, sun damage, and skin cancer. If you have to be out in the midday sun, avoid long periods of direct sun exposure, use an umbrella and stay in the shade. If you plan to be out in the sun we strongly recommend you use a sunscreen product with an SPF of 15 or higher.
Never leave children exposed to the sun without adequate protection. Studies suggest that over-exposure early in life may lead to skin cancers later in life. Teach sun protection at home and in schools. Enforce "no hat, no play" rules that keep bareheaded kids indoors. A child’s skin needs increased protection. Sunscreens cannot protect infants younger than 6 months old because of their skin structure. Clothes made of tightly woven fabrics are recommended for infants.
Topical application of antioxidant nutrients in DermaPlenish® including polyphenols from Grape Seed and Green Tea Extracts as well as other plant sources, may provide further protection from sunlight.

[Note: DermaPlenish® is Not a Sunscreen]

Basic Skin Care

Cleanse your face every morning and evening. Protect and moisturize your skin with DermaPlenish®.
To prevent dryness, take short showers in lukewarm water using mild soap substitutes. Hot water worsens dry skin. Gently pat your skin dry with a cotton towel after a shower or bath. Seal moisture into your skin by applying DermaPlenish® immediately after bathing, while your skin is still damp. A second application is recommended at the end of each day.
Keep your skin hydrated. Drink at least eight glasses of water a day.
Don’t smoke. Essential nutrients can be depleted by smoking. It can also cause premature wrinkles.
Eat lean. Avoid saturated and trans-fats. Research indicates that reducing fat consumption can cut the risk of precancerous skin growths. A diet rich in a variety of vegetables, fruits and nuts will increase antioxidant levels in the body, which will also provide protection against any sun induced radiation damage.
Protect and heal skin from the inside out. Take Dermagen® and Physician’s Rx® Formula for your daily supply of essential fatty acids, antioxidant nutrients [Coenzyme Q10, Alpha Lipoic Acid, Vitamins A, C and E, Carotenoids, Zinc, Selenium, N-Acetylcysteine (which can be converted into Glutathione), Grape Seed Extract, Green Tea, and other Flavonoids] and Vitamin B-Complex to help ward off UV damage.
Avoid drugs that increase your likelihood of burning such as barbiturates, phenothiazines, griseofulvin, chlorothiazides (and other diuretics) and promethazine. Tetracycline and sulfa antibiotics as well as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, such as ibuprofen (in dosages used to treat arthritis), can increase your sensitivity to sunlight and your risk of getting sunburn. Consult your physician or pharmacist about your current medication(s) and medical condition(s) that may cause photosensitivity (i.e. increase susceptibility to sunburn).

Skin Inspection

Develop a routine to inspect your skin for new moles or other growths as well as for changes in existing ones. Look for a change in the number, size, color or shape of moles, blemishes or freckles. Also look for skin discoloration or the appearance of small scaly spots, known as actinic keratoses, which can become cancerous if not treated. Consult your physician as soon as you discover any suspicious skin lesion.
A dermatologist should check your skin every 3 years before age 40, and every year after that. You are at higher risk of skin cancer if irregularly shaped moles run in your family or if you have fair skin or freckles, blistering sunburns, a lot of moles, or you already have had skin cancer.

What are UVA and UVB?

Light is electromagnetic (EM) radiation comprising wavelengths of about 380 nanometers (violet) to about 800 nm (red). Ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun begins beyond visible violet, and is divided into long-wave UVA (around 380-320 nm), medium-wave UVB (around 320-280 nm) and short-wave UVC (around 280-180 nm). UVA and a portion of UVB reach the Earth’s surface even on a very cloudy day. UV radiation is more intense at higher altitudes, near the equator and in summer. Ultraviolet radiation affects skin in a number of ways.

UVB rays, the light that causes sunburn, primarily penetrates the epidermis and affects the outer skin layers. It can activate the synthesis of Vitamin D, which assists the body in the absorption of calcium and other minerals. Although sunlight helps produce essential Vitamin D in our bodies, we only need about 10 to 20 minutes of sun exposure a day to obtain full benefit.

The longer wavelength UVA rays, also known as "black light", represent approximately 95% of the ultraviolet solar radiation reaching the Earth’s surface at the equator. UVA penetrates deeply into the skin and is responsible for tanning. It contributes substantially to chronic sun damage to the skin, resulting in blotchy pigmentation, loss of skin elasticity, skin thinning, fragility, and hemorrhage of blood vessels.

Both UVA and UVB rays can penetrate the deepest layers of the skin and damage collagen — the protein that gives skin its structure, firmness and elasticity. UV radiation is immunosuppressive. It diminishes the number of Langerhans cells, which reside in the epidermis and act as the skin’s security force. UV radiation also disturbs the metabolic efficiency of skin cells, and interferes with T cell immunity, making the immune system blind to specific harmful agents.

UVC, which is almost completely filtered out of the earth’s atmosphere by the ozone layer, is germicidal and kills bacteria, viruses and other infectious-disease agents. It is potentially harmful on direct exposure. UVC is of little importance since it does not reach Earth.

Optimize the Health of Your Skin

Creating beautiful healthy skin requires proper nutrition through a well balanced diet and appropriate nutritional supplementation. Studies on the dietary habits of various populations indicate that the more vegetables, fruits, olive oil, fish, peas and beans, low-fat yogurt and other low-fat milk products people eat, the fewer wrinkles they get. Conversely, the more full fat dairy foods, butter, margarine, red meat (especially processed meat), soft drinks, and cakes and pastries that are consumed, the more wrinkled the skin gets. Eating sweets can adversely affect skin health. That is, consuming too much sugar can cause abnormally high insulin and sugar levels in the body, which can lead to inflammation of cells, premature wrinkles and stiffness in the skin associated with aging. The relationship between nutrition and skin health is well established:

Research suggests that foods high in Vitamin C, Calcium, Magnesium, Iron, and Zinc protect the skin from wrinkles.
Nutrients in your diet such as Coenzyme Q10, Alpha Lipoic Acid, Vitamins K, A, E and C, Carotenoids, Flavonoids, Omega-3 Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids, and other Essential Fatty Acids (Black Currant, Borage, Flaxseed and Evening Primrose Oils) can promote healthy and attractive skin with optimal function.
Antioxidants such as Coenzyme Q10, Alpha Lipoic Acid, Carotenoids, Flavonoids (such as Grape Seed and Green Tea Extracts), Vitamins A, C, and E have long been known to protect the skin (and your body) from the visible signs of aging by preventing free radical damage produced in the skin by harmful UV radiation.
Vitamin C can stimulate cell regeneration and produce healthy collagen, which is the glue that holds skin together and makes young skin "plump" and "juicy".
Vitamin E may reduce moisture loss and promote healing. Research studies indicate that Vitamin E combined with Carotenoids may actually reduce the skin-reddening effects of sunburn.
Vitamin A works from within by targeting problems beneath the skin surface, correcting collagen formation and making damaged skin cells line up properly. It also helps unclog blocked skin follicles to inhibit the development of acne. Vitamin A is an extremely effective topical exfoliant. It is very effective at diminishing the tiny wrinkles that may develop around the eyes and mouth in keeping skin smooth.
Vitamin K helps decrease bruising and reduces redness near broken blood vessels.

Proper nutrition in addition to protection from sun damage is necessary to preserve the health of your skin. Did you know that deficiencies in nutrients such as Folic Acid, Vitamin B-12, Vitamin B-6, Niacin, Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Iron, or Zinc, can cause the same types of effects (DNA damage and oxidative lesions) as radiation? Nutrients provided by our food and by dietary supplements along with targeted skin nutrients and dermal protectants applied topically play a very important role in maintaining the health and vitality of our skin. Unfortunately, the average American diet is low in fruits and vegetables, and high in sugar and fat. Most Americans also do not drink the recommended 8 glasses of water daily.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an antioxidant?
An antioxidant is a substance that helps fight off (neutralize) harmful free radicals.

What is a free radical?
A free radical is an atom or a molecule which contains one or more unpaired electron(s) and is highly reactive and destructive. The hydroxyl radical, superoxide anion, nitric oxide, and lipid peroxyl radical are examples of free radicals of biological importance. Hydrogen peroxide and singlet oxygen are other reactive substances that can damage body components.

What are essential fatty acids?
Linoleic and Linolenic Acids are essential fatty acids (EFAs). Our bodies cannot synthesize these nutrients. They must be obtained from the diet.

What are coenzymes?
A coenzyme is an enzyme-helper which is necessary to activate vital enzymes in the body. Many vitamins act as coenzymes in our body.

What are cosmeceuticals?
Cosmeceuticals are ingredients used in cosmetic products which, in addition to providing functionality, also provide protective and therapeutic properties.

What are emollients?
Emollients are oleaginous substances which form a protective layer on the skin and also render it softer and more pliable. They are used in creams to provide a vehicle for the lipid soluble nutrients.

What is dermatitis?
Dermatitis is a term used to describe various skin conditions that result in a superficial inflammation of the skin.

What are keratinocytes?
Keratinocytes are skin cells that form the deepest layer of the epidermis. As they develop, keratinocytes travel to the surface, losing moisture and becoming flatter. The top layer of skin is made up of flat, now dead, keratinocytes, which are constantly sloughed off.

What is the function of collagen and elastin?
Collagen and elastin are proteins that give skin its structure and elasticity.

What are Langerhans cells?
Langerhans cells reside in the epidermis. These immune cells catch and process foreign intruders, including antigens and micro-organisms, and then migrate to the lymph nodes to activate the T lymphocytes that will mount the final immune response. Langerhans cells also produce compounds to regulate the synthesis of many skin components.

What are the different skin types?

DRY SKIN
• Requires regular moisturizing.

• Tends to scale easily.

• Often very sensitive and easily irritated.

• Premature wrinkles form around the mouth and eyes.

NORMAL SKIN
• Smooth, soft, requires occasional moisturizing.

• Tends to shift to the DRY SKIN type with increasing age.

OILY SKIN
• Pores are visible, oily areas on the forehead, nose, chin, etc.

• Prone to acne, blackheads.

• Requires routine cleansing/de-oiling with mild facial soap and water.

MIXED SKIN
• Contains the elements of DRY SKIN on some parts and OILY SKIN on other parts.

• The nose and the forehead can be oily, while the sides of the face and cheeks are dry.

What are UVA and UVB?
UVA and UVB refer to the two main types of ultraviolet radiation from the sun.

What is a broad-spectrum sunscreen?
Sunscreens that shield your skin from the fullest possible range of damaging ultraviolet rays are broad-spectrum sunscreens. Sunscreens that contain Parsol 1789 (avobenzone), in addition to zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, provide "broad-spectrum" protection.

Can nutrients penetrate through the outer layer of the skin?
Yes, nutrients can penetrate the skin when they are solubilized. The "hydrosoluble" form of reduced Coenzyme Q10, formulated in a proprietary lipid base, facilitates easy absorption of CoQ10 and the other vitamins and cofactors. DermaPlenish® is the only topical product formulated with this highly bioavailable form of CoQ10.

Can nutritional supplements help speed skin repair and wound healing?
Yes, there are many nutrients that can facilitate burn and wound healing and promote skin repair. Vitamin C (plus Citrus Bioflavonoids) and Zinc play a very important role in skin repair and wound healing. Some researchers have shown that a combination of Vitamin B-5 (Pantothenic Acid) with Vitamin C helps bring more minerals such as copper, magnesium and manganese to wound areas, thus enhancing the healing process. Supplements that contain oligomeric proanthocyanidins (OPCs), which are substances found in grape seed and pine bark, may also be helpful in the treatment of injuries, as their use has been shown to help reduce edema and swelling. Amino acids such as arginine and glutamine also play a vital role in burn and wound healing. Physician’s Rx Formula is a comprehensive daily nutritional formula, which contains a synergistic blend of nutrients that can help you meet daily nutritional requirements to maintain healthy skin and promote skin repair.

What are trans-fats?
Trans-fats, also known as trans-fatty acids, are found in vegetable shortenings, and in some margarines, crackers, cakes, cookies, donuts, snack foods, deep fried foods, and other processed foods. They are made through the process of hydrogenation that solidifies liquid oils. Hydrogenation increases the shelf life and flavor stability of these oils and foods that contain them. Similar to saturated fats, trans-fats have been shown to raise blood cholesterol levels, and are considered unhealthy.

Monthly Self-Examinations are Recommended

The best way to detect sun-damaged spots is to check your body thoroughly each month.

1.
With your arms raised in front of a full length mirror, check the right and left sides of your body.
2.
Standing in front of the mirror, examine your head and face. Check the back of your neck with the help of a hand mirror
3.
With your back to a full-length mirror, use a hand mirror to check your back, and the back of your shoulders, upper arms and legs.
4.
Bend your elbows and examine the forearms, upper arms, and hands, including the palms.

Keep Your Skin Creams and Lotions Safe

Skin creams and lotions usually contain protective ingredients (preservatives) that prevent bacteria and other organisms in the air from contaminating your product every time you open the container. However, faulty personal hygiene or misuse can also cause contamination and increase your risk of infection. In order to keep your skin creams and lotions safe remember to:

Keep containers tightly closed when not in use.
Wash your hands before applying skin creams and lotions. Dirty hands are germ carriers.
Don’t add water to skin care products as this can introduce bacteria.
Discard products that have lost their original texture and consistency, changed color or developed an odor.
Store skin care products out of direct sunlight and at temperatures below 85°F, as light and heat can degrade preservatives as well as active ingredients.
