ENERGIZE Your Skin...

10 WAYS TO PROTECT YOUR SKIN

Here are some hints to protect yourself from skin cancer. Remember, the best prevention against skin cancer is to minimize the time of sun exposure!

1.
Avoid excessive sun exposure and limit your time to the sun. Beach Lovers...Avoid the sun during the middle of the day, especially between 10 AM and 4 PM, when it’s most intense.
2.
Wear protective clothing and sunglasses with at least 99 percent protection against UVA and UVB sunlight. A long- sleeved shirt and a wide-brimmed hat will help protect the skin from the sun.
3.
Apply a broad or full-spectrum sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 15 to ALL exposed skin areas, including the top of ears, lips and bald scalp areas, at least 15 to 20 minutes prior to sun exposure.
4.
Long lasting (>8 hours) and waterproof sunscreen is highly recommended. Sunscreens labeled with SPF (sun protection factor) of 15 can block up to 93% of damage from sun exposure.
5.
Reapply sunscreen after heavy perspiring or swimming, even if the sunscreen is waterproof.
6.
Consult your physician about your current medication(s) and medical condition(s) that may cause “photosensitivity”, i.e., increase susceptibility to sunburn.
7.
Tanning booths utilize ultraviolet light, which also causes skin damage related to skin cancer and skin aging like sun exposure.
8.
A tan from sun exposure or a tanning booth may provide some protection against sunburn, but this type of protection is generally minimal. Remember skin damage does occur in the presence of a tan.
9.
Children are more susceptible to sunburn than adults are. Sunscreens with SPF of 15 or greater provide excellent protection for children; however, sunscreen cannot protect infants younger than 6 months old because of their skin structure. Clothes made of tightly woven fabrics are recommended for infants.
10.
Consult your physician as soon as you discover any suspicious skin lesion.

“Beware the Sun” - do not expose your skin to the sun
without adequate sunscreen protection - and even then, limit your exposure to short durations.
